The Homeowner’s Guide to Steam Heat

Where is all the water going?

Doug Goss

Where is all the boiler water going? “There’s no water on the floor but I have to fill the boiler three times a day!”

Well get ready for this…..It’s most likely going up your chimney!

Look at the picture above do you see that little hole in the cast iron? Steam boilers are sneaky, they don’t like you to know what’s going on with them, so instead of developing a hole which will leak on the floor they get a hole right at the water line. Yes the water which is acidic eats a hole right through the cast iron block of the boiler. You won’t see it leaking since it’s never filled with water above that point!

Here’s the telltale signs you have a hole in the water line of your steam boiler.

Refurbishing Cast Iron Steam Radiators: Restore Beauty, Comfort, and Character to Your Rhode Island Home

When people think about old steam radiators, they often picture bulky metal fixtures covered in layers of chipped paint, making strange noises and taking up valuable wall space.

But what if those radiators could become one of the most beautiful features in your home?

Many of Rhode Island’s historic homes, apartment buildings, and commercial properties contain original cast-iron radiators that are more than 75 years old. While years of neglect, poor maintenance, and repeated painting may have diminished their appearance, these radiators were originally designed to be both functional and decorative.

With professional refurbishment, they can be again.

Why Are My Steam Radiators Banging, Hissing, and Clanging? A Rhode Island Expert Explains

Doug Goss

I hear the same thing at least ten times every heating season from customers, “I had a new steam boiler installed, the old one worked perfect and was quiet, now my pipes are banging, air vents whistling and my heating fuel bill shows more fuel consumption than the old boiler used.” We head down into the basement and I tell them the bad news, the contractor who installed your boiler knows nothing about steam and it has to be completely repiped. Sadly some decide they can live with it, the boilers we repipe properly work perfectly afterwards and all problems disappear. It’s not magic, it is understanding the physics and complexities involved in moving steam from a boiler to the radiators efficiently and quietly!

Take a look at the steam piping in the picture above. If

Residential Steam Heat Repair in Rhode Island: Don’t Replace Your System Before Reading This

Doug Goss

If you own an older home in Rhode Island, there’s a good chance your heating system has been quietly doing its job for decades.

Steam heating systems were commonly installed in pre-war homes, historic Newport mansions, apartment buildings, duplexes, and triple-deckers throughout New England. Many of these systems are now 75 to 100 years old—and some are even older.

When problems begin to appear, many homeowners assume the entire system needs to be replaced.

In many cases, that’s simply not true.

Your Steam Heating System May Have More Life Left Than You Think

Steam heating systems were built differently than most modern heating equipment.

The boilers, pipes, and cast-iron radiators found in older homes were designed to last for generations. While

Commercial Steam Heat Repair in Rhode Island: Keeping Older Buildings Comfortable and Efficient

Doug Goss

Many of Rhode Island’s apartment buildings, schools, churches, office buildings, and multi-family properties were built decades ago—and many still rely on the same steam heating systems that were installed when the buildings were first constructed.

These systems can provide reliable, comfortable heat for generations, but they require specialized maintenance and repair. Unfortunately, as steam heating expertise becomes less common, many property owners struggle to find contractors who truly understand how these systems work.

That’s where Veteran Steam Heat of Rhode Island comes in.

Steam Heating Systems Are Built to Last

Commercial steam heating systems are remarkably durable. It’s not unusual to find boilers, piping networks, and radiators that have been

Installing a New Steam Boiler in Rhode Island: Why Proper Installation Matters

Doug Goss

Look closely at the boiler picture above. If you had a steam boiler installed recently and it does not look like this then you may have serious problems with the installation. Replacing a steam boiler isn’t as simple as removing the old unit and connecting a new one.

In fact, many of the steam heating problems homeowners experience after a boiler replacement can be traced back to one issue: the new boiler was not installed correctly or according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

At Veteran Steam Heat of Rhode Island, we understand that a steam boiler is only one part of a much larger heating system. To achieve maximum comfort, efficiency, and reliability, every component must work together properly.

How Steam Heat Works: The 100-Year-Old Heating System That’s Still Beating the Odds

Doug Goss

Imagine having a heating system installed before World War II that’s still keeping your home warm today.

It may sound surprising, but throughout Rhode Island, countless homes and commercial buildings rely on steam heating systems that are 75, 100, or even 120 years old. While modern furnaces and heat pumps often need replacement after 15 to 25 years, properly maintained steam systems can continue operating for generations.

So what’s the secret behind their longevity?

Built to Last

One of the biggest reasons steam heating systems have survived for so long is their simplicity.

Unlike many modern heating systems that rely on complex electronics, motors, and multiple moving parts, traditional steam systems have relatively few components that can fail. When

Steam heating systems have been keeping Rhode Island homes and businesses warm for generations. From boilers and pipes to radiators and vents, every component must work together properly to deliver consistent, quiet heat throughout a building.

Unfortunately, not every heating contractor understands the unique mechanics of steam heat. That’s why choosing an experienced steam heating specialist can make all the difference.

Why Does My Radiator Keep Banging? End the Steam Stress

If you own a home with an old steam heating system, you know how the sound of banging radiators can really crank up your stress levels. There you are, trying to relax after a long day, and suddenly, a wave of clanging echoes through your living room. Talk about a jolt to your nerves! Steam heat is cozy and classic, but those unexpected noises can make you feel like you’re living in a haunted house.

You’re not alone if the constant racket has left you feeling frustrated and anxious. We’ve heard from plenty of homeowners who worry that every knock and hiss means something big—and expensive—is about to break. That feeling of uncertainty can really take the joy out of coming home, especially when the weather outside makes a warm, peaceful house so important.

Understanding Steam Radiators: How They Heat Your Home

Ever wondered how those classic steam radiators in your Rhode Island home actually keep you warm? While they might seem old-school, steam heating systems are both efficient and reliable when maintained properly. Here’s a look at how the whole process works—and why you stay toasty on cold winter nights.

Steam radiators start with a central steam boiler. Water inside the boiler is heated until it turns into steam, which then travels through a network of pipes. As the steam moves through the pipes, it eventually reaches your radiators, where the real magic happens. The steam enters the radiator and fills up the hollow sections, quickly transferring heat to the metal.

That heat doesn’t just stay inside the radiator—it radiates outward, warming up your rooms. Once

Is Your Steam Heating System a Mystery? Here’s What to Know

Ever look at your steam heating system and wonder what’s actually going on behind those pipes and radiators? If you find yourself scratching your head whenever it makes a new noise, or if you’re unsure whether it’s running as it should, you’re definitely not alone. Steam heating systems can seem like a relic from another era—mysterious, a bit intimidating, and sometimes full of surprises.

One of the most common pain points for Rhode Island homeowners is not knowing what’s “normal” for a steam heating system. Is that clanking just routine, or the sign of a bigger issue? Should there be so much hissing, or is that supposed to be happening? And what do you do when one radiator is ice cold but another feels like the surface of the sun?

The uncertainty is
